Actually, we don't really know what brought this about, but for about the last six months we've watched a little "worm" grow across our bathroom wall behind the really expensive paint that we put on the wall to protect it from water. I guess we should have thought about the 70 year old tile and grout that was on the bottom part of the wall, because we are blaming it as the culprit of this crime.
Last weekend we were sitting around in the front room and we heard a sound like dishes shifting in the sink. You know, the one like two glasses shifting together. We thought it was weird to we went and checked out the kitchen sink, cabinets, fridge with nothing. Thinking it was probably just some of our mugs that we have stacked to save some room in our tiny house, we went back to reading. Not more than 5 minutes later we heard the noise again. This time we were sure we were losing it, but went for another look. Again, nothing. This search even brought a look in on Ivin sleeping soundly in the other room - nothing. So, we went on with our lazy Sunday afternoon.
A few hours later Kelly went to put some stuff in the bathroom and turned to catch the sound-maker red-handed. Four or five tiles had fallen off of the tub area - where the "worm" was growing. To our surprise there was no real mold or anything, just some popped up plaster. YES! We love plaster! I often wonder why we don't use plaster anymore. It's so easy to work with, fix, put things on. You know it doesn't crumble when you touch it or anything.
So, as if we thought we'd have a break from our last few weeks of sweating off the weight in the attic, now we're moving on to the main bathroom upstairs. Yep! The pink treasure is under full construction. We ripped out everything around the shower back through the lathe and plaster and insulation. (That was an unexpected joy.) I forgot to take a picture of everything all ripped out, so you just get a shot behind the shower head side that I haven't put up the blue backer board on yet. I've got to figure out how to fix the plumming so that this isn't a midget shower anymore. As you will recall, I haven't been midget size since the 5th grade and a 5 foot tall shower head just doesn't cut it every morning and has literally been a "sore spot" on my forehead many times.
So, we'll keep you updated on this adventure. Things I've learned so far...
1) Water is a good thing, yet can be the cause of so many utterings
2) There are a lot of different types of products that basically do the same thing
3) When there is nothing above the shower (besides the lathe and plaster) going into the attic, all of the insulation above the shower falls from the attic onto your head if you rip off the lathe and plaster
4) Measure once, cut twice. Measure twice, cut three times.
5) The amount of lathe and plaster in one shower area = the volume of two large garbage cans when you take out all of the lathe for fire woode and add in all of the insulation. IF you don't take out the lathe it would take all of the garbage cans on the block to fit the stuff in.
6) Work masks that only cost $1 each, are only really worth $1 - they don't do much other than make it hard to breathe
7) Lynolium glued to the top of lynolium is very difficult to get off of the floor
8) I have no idea what I'm doing, so I do everything right (as far as I'm concerned)
Here's a pic of the little man for you all to gaze at this week. I get in trouble when I don't paste the progress. He's a cute little guy and we love him.
Sully is still around. Now that it is hot, he spends most of his time lying around in the shade. We see him less and less every day, so we often wonder if he is looking for a house that will feed him better, and possibly let him in. I guess the little guy doesn't like cheap food. Who knew you could get a whole bag of cat food for $2. As far as I'm concerned, Ivin is going to think Lucky Charms were supposed to be brown and taste like Chicken and Tuna.
That really sucks! The good thing is that you are learning new things and you will have a spectacular new bathroom when everything is done. Your baby is adorable!
ReplyDeleteDon't you just love owning a house! Hahaha
ReplyDeleteJust think - when you get done with all of the updates, it will be time to redecorate. That baby will be walking around by then...at least that's what happened to us. Hopefully you are finding a few minutes here and there to put some miles in.
